I did some research and the below baits are what I had found to be the MOST POPULAR baits for catching the lunkers (3 lb. + Trout) in Montauk State Park. 1) White colored Jigs are the MOST popular bait used to catch the lunkers, or so it seems, but also yellow, pink, peach and black/yellow combos are popular. Keep the jigs small (1/64 - 1/128 ounce). Everyone should have a bunch of white mini jigs in their tackle when visiting Montauk! 2) Dough Bait 3) Power Bait (orange or white most popular) 4) Trout worms (most popular colors being white, chartreuse green, orange, pink OR any combination colored of these). Eventhough not a lunker, we had fair luck on some stockers (4 after the buzzer) on orange/white trout worms purchased at the lodge store on our last trip. 5) Some have noted that tri-colored glo balls and white, chartreuse green or orange rooster tails produce results. Fly Patterns-------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) Gold ribbed #16 hairs ear nymph or other of the herin noted colors produce good results for fly fisherman. A few have even expressed good results on an olive #10 Mohair Leech, white #12-16 nymphs, olive #10 wooly buggers and #14-20 Griffith's Knat's. So, word to the wise, keep some (or all) of the above baits stocked in your tackle box when preparing a trip to Montauk. Also, attention rod & reel fishing enthusiasts: ONLY USE 4 lb. or less test line. Trout get spooked easy with anything higher. I usually have one pole with 2 lb. and one with 4 lb. test with me.
