I have been going down to the current river for the last 6 years. In the last few years I have noticed that the law enforcement officers have been getting very aggressive. I was the unfortunately recipient of the style of enforcement this summer. One law enforcement official from the state water patrol officer, Steve Hogan pulled me and my girlfriend over. Both of us were twenty one but at the time we were not drinking. My girlfriend made the comment that he had not probable cause. He got mad and said I’ll find something. He gave us a ticket “littering” for one plastic bottle in the bottom of the boat. This was the bottle that I was drinking at the time he waved us to the bank. He also gave us a ticket for not having a proper trash container. We had the trash container for the outfitter Jadwin, potatoes sack looking thing. We had to drive 6 hours for our court date in Eminence Missouri. The court room had 100 people with similar charges. Bottom line, it’s a money maker for the court and county. The running joke in the court room was “Current River come on down for a vacation and leave on probation”! This situation was not Jadwin canoes fault, but if I would have known the story of how the cops were acting I would have gone to a more friendly location. Younger adults and teens are targeted by the cops in the national river areas! No jokes, don’t go!
