Just registered today and was glad to find the forum with so much valuable info on the Rivers. I live in Van Buren presently, and grew up on the Current at Dunrovin back when it was a private "resort". It is just above El Rancho Rio, about 4 to 6 miles above Doniphan. My parents were caretakers of the place, and I had a canoe and the man that was the caretaker allowed me to keep his extra 14 ft jon and 5hp Merc at our place for me to run the river. I worked at Deer Lodge, and used that boat and motor to get to and from work. I was in charge of tube and canoe rentals, the gas pump, did the mowing and yard work and was just 11 or 12 years old. Im 44 now, and am currently making plans to float from just below Montauk to the Deer Leap Campground or the Dunrovin access, about 100 miles or so. I plan to take cameras and take a lot of digital stills and use my Sony video camera to film all I can, then write an article on the trip and post it here and as many other forums possible, as well as provide it to the ONSR for their use in promoting the river. Im getting all my gear and equipment prepared, looking for sponsors, and plan to float it late August, early September when the temp drops a bit and the squirells are decent to eat.
I like to do a little gunsmithing, and a few years ago did field tests for many gun parts/accessories companies, up to 30 at the peak of my work. I was provided free samples, included them in one of the gun builds I had going at the time, took photos, wrote a review, and posted them on several gun forums. Had to give that up, it became an 12 to 18 hr a day gig but it was a lot of fun and I got several custom rifles built.
I am looking for a used aluminum canoe, doesnt have to pretty, and can even have a little leak. I would be interested in swapping a custom SKS rifle for it if anyone is interested.
