The other night, I was searching the internet for some new content related to Montauk State Park when I happened upon this nice website by a gentleman named Donnie Lagemann:
www.angelfire.com/mo3/clearwaterflyfishing/
It struck me quickly that Donnie was a BIG Montauk fan and loved fishing there and too just about anywhere he could get his pole in the water. Another thing that struck me though was that it has been about a year or so since he last updated his informative page. Seemed a bit odd to me at the time. Well, after thoroughly enjoying his flies page, I decided to sign and then read his guestbook. As I scrolled through the entries I had happened upon one that especially caught my eye which said:
"We lost donnie on July 5, 2004. I miss you so much!!! I love ya bro. It will never be the same without you fishing next to me.
Your brother-in-law,
Chris Gray"
Not really understanding what that meant or if it were a prank, I did a little more research on "Chris Gray" and happened upon his email address. So, I emailed Chris asking "what happened to Donnie?" and today I received a touching, sad email back which read as follows:
"Donnie had a seizure while fishing out of a small jon boat on the lake behined their house. He was in the middle of tying a rope around a tree to keep the boat from drifting. When his seizue happened, he fell over board. Melinda was in Louisiana picking up the kids (July 4th was the 7th year anniversary so her mom kept the kids that night) when it happened. Elaine and I was on our way home from camping at Bennet Springs, and when we got home, Mel called and said she didn't know where Donnie was, but his truck was home and there was a boat on the lake tied to a tree. This was about 4:00 and about 6 or 7, we called back to see if she had heard from him, and we were told the rescue crew and cops where there. We left for their house and we weren't there 15min when the workers found him in the lake. he wasn't 10 feet from shore and in only about 5 feet of water. Mel has sold the house and now lives back in Eolia with Sammy and Austin. It's hard to beleive it has been a year. Still seems like yesterday. I am sorry I didn't post it on my site. I haven't updated it in a while, and I tried to gain access to Donnie's, but angelfire.com has never reponed to my emails. When I get my scanner hooked up I will scan his obituary and email it to ya. I have been on a few trout trips this year, and it is not the same without him there. He will always be missed. I'll try to send it to ya in the next couple of days. Thanks for asking about him,
Chris Gray"

That was such a sad story that the least that I could do in memory of Donnie was to post it here on the board and recommend to everyone to go hug your spouse, girlfriend, children, mother, father, etc. and tell them how much you really love them, because we may never get a chance tomorrow to say those precious words. ~God bless Donnie~ ----- Obituary
