1) The ONSR was created by an Act of Congress on Aug. 24, 1964 to protect 134 miles (more than 80,000 acres) of the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers in the Ozark Highlands of southeaster Missouri.
2) The Ozark National Scenic Riverways was the nation's first "scenic riverways" - a forerunner to the Wild and Scenic River Act, which the Eleven Point River is apart of, by four years.
3) There are 112 species of fish, 197 species of birds, and 58 species of mammals found in the park. There are also 26 species of amphibians and 46 species of reptiles found in the park area, including 4 venemous snakes (see #10 for more info.).
4) The park is home to approximately 1,000 plant species.
5) About 1.5 million people a year visit the Ozark NSR. Visitation is heaviest during the summer months, especially during weekends and holidays.
6) The rivers are considered to be Class 1 streams. This is the easiest classification used. Horsepower limitations on outboard motors are in effect above Big Spring boat landing (Current River) and on the entire Jacks Fork River within the park. Check the MissouriScenicRivers.com main page for more info.
7) There are 318 miles of roads within the park, most of which are secondary public roads and backcountry roads or traces. State Highway 19 and US Highway 60 privide the primary road access into the area.
8) There are 14 miles of designated horse trails and 48 miles of foot trails located within the park.
9) The park contains an 8.5 mile section of the Ozark Trail.
10) There are 52 species and subspecies of snakes in Missouri. There are only five species of venomous snakes in all of Missouri (Osage/Southern(subspecies) Copperhead, Western Cottonmouth, Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake, Western Pygmy Rattlesnake and Timber Rattlesnake). Of these 5, only 4 are within the ONSR park. The Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake isn't in the park, only northern Missouri.
11) Missouri has a total of 17 species of turtles and 25 species of toads and frogs.
