Well, a couple of buddies of mine decided to go up to the Current River about 2 months ago. We went up there on Aug. 9th. We planned on staying for a pretty good while, but wound up stayin for two days. It didnt take long to get up there from where were from, TN.
When we first got up there the first thing we did was flaot the Current. Our campsite was at Big Spring, near Van Buren. We went to this place that rented out rafts, a lodge type place, cant remember the name. They then took us way on up this road, seemed like it took forever. We decided we were gonna take the day trip which is 5 1/2 hours. I didnt really wanna take a trip that long down the river, but my two other friends wanted to.
We all had a raft and a raft for the cooler. We thought it was gonna be a nice gentle ride down the river, but man you gotta put a little work into it. Like trying not to run into the rock walls on the banks of the river, and dodging trees that are in the river, and watching out for large rocks sticking out of the water. I mean dont take it like its bad. I had fun. And it was mainly a gentle ride down the river. But every now and then you have to keep yourself with the current of the river and watch out for things. I guess that goes for any river you try and float down in an intertube.
We got a pretty good ways down the river and there was a whole bunch of people jumping off this cliff. It was pretty high up and not the sort of cliff they would probly allow people to jump off of, but they were still doing it anyways. I didnt care, im not a police officer. They asked if we wanted to jump, but we werent that crazy. Looked like shallow water to me. The dude who asked us said he only hit the bottom twice. LOL, idiot.
After we were done and made it back to the lodge place we decided to go back to the camp at Big Spring and grill some food. it was all good. There werent too many people there, which we didnt mind if there were.
Now ive been camping before, my friends really havent been camping or "roughed" it before. So when it finally got dark they got pretty spooked. My two friends got into an argument over wether the noises we were hearing was a hoot owl or a wolf. In my opinion i think it was a hoot owl. Kinda hard to tell for some reason. We had a fire goin and were sittin around it drinkin some Coors Lights and playin Texas Hold'em (card game/poker). Weather was nice and quiet as hell. Felt good. The next day we took off. Sucked that we had to, but my friend had a family problem back home.
But all in all it was a fun trip. I'd only reccommend taking a shorter trip down the Current River if your gonna float down it in intertubes.
